Howard County Livestock Info


***IMPORTANT*** - Please remember that all entries are due no later than July 1st!  We are uable to accept any entries after this date.

Breeding Livestock -4-H’ers entering their Beef, Dairy, and Sheep breeding animals need to complete an Open Class Entry Form which is located in your Howard County Fair Book.  This form must be submitted to the Howard County Fair, % Bettina Catalano, 201 Heritage Farm Drive, Mt Airy, MD 21771  by July 1st. Remember to check off that the animal is a 4-H Project. One entry blank will cover 4-H and open class.  Also remember to enclose your entry fee and mail them to the Howard County Fair.  Breeding Swine and Breeding Goats need to complete a different form and submit to the 4-H Office.

Market Livestock - is already entered for the County Fair. You need to enter them for State Fair if you plan to attend.  Maryland State Fair entries can only be done online and they need to be completed no later than July 31st.

Market Goat Exhibitors - All 4-H Market goats must have horns tipped or blunted for county and state fair!!

2011 4-H RATE-OF-GAIN PROGRAM - Market animals must gain the amounts listed to show and sell. Weight checks are provided to help you monitor your animals growth.

Beef - 2.00 pounds of gain per day

Sheep - .40 pounds of gain per day

Swine - 1.50 pounds of gain per day

Goats - .20 pounds of gain per day

Horse, Poultry, Rabbit,  & Goat animal entries - Entry blanks are available at our office or you can print them from our website.  All entries are due by July 1st.  Horse entry blanks are color coded, therefore, we prefer that you use the printed color coded forms.  Centaurs 4-H Club and Spur and Stirrup 4-H Club received color coded entry blanks to distribute to members at their June meeting.

Livestock Orientation Meeting - All 4-Hers are expected to attend the Livestock Orientation Meeting scheduled for Sunday, July 31st at 6:00 p.m. in the show ring. This meeting will provide important information about the fair.

Livestock Department has Dress Code - Refer to your county and state fair books for the dress code for the show and livestock sale. NO DEVIATIONS FROM THESE DRESS CODES WILL BE ALLOWED! This includes HATS! Special club or farm shirts may be worn at other times throughout the fair but not during the shows. Kelly/Spruce Green is the appropriate color green- not shades of teal and blue green. Cell Phones are not allowed in the show ring.

Sheep Lead Contest - will be held Saturday, August 13th at 2:30 pm.  Any 4-H member is eligible to enter this contest.  You do not have to be enrolled in the sheep project.  More information for this contest is located in the 4-H Sheep Department section of the fair book.
